Happy Birthday Jia Jia – who at 37 is the oldest ever giant panda in captivity

Today Jia Jia became the world’s oldest ever panda in captivity as she turned 37 – the equivalent of 111 human years.

It’s a big landmark for Jia Jia, who lives at Ocean Park in Hong Kong, as most giant pandas have an average life span of 18-20 years.
The park’s veterinary service director, Paolo Martelli, said: ‘It’s quite exceptional to reach such an old age for a panda.’
Born in 1978, Jia Jia moved to the park in March 1999 and has happily called it home ever since.

Wild pandas were once found all over southern and eastern China, but are now considered one of the world’s most endangered animals.
