Daft Punk have been crowned kings of the Grammy awards – but Lorde stole the show with two gongs for her breakthrough hit Royals.

The French electronic pioneers won the night’s most prestigious award as Random Access Memories was named album of the year.

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo – wearing their trademark robot masks – hugged each other for several seconds before taking the stage with Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and Paul Williams, part of the large crew who helped them produce the album.

It was one of four awards for the duo, who were joined by Pharrell, Rodgers and Stevie Wonder for a show-stopping performance of record of the year Get Lucky.

New Zealand teenager Lorde – unknown to most music fans a year ago – bagged two of the night’s biggest awards for her breakthrough hit Royals.

The 17-year-old took to the stage to perform the worldwide smash, which earned her awards for song of the year and best solo pop performance.

She said: “Thank you everyone who has let this song explode because it’s been mental.”

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were the night’s other big winners, picking up four awards including a clean sweep in the rap category and the best new artist prize.

Macklemore said: “I want to say we made this album without a record label, we made it independently and we appreciate all the support.” .. see more
