Facebook’s Zuckerberg nods to Apple’s Steve Jobs

MENLO PARK, Calif. — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg pulled out an unmistakable Steve Jobs show move today at company headquarters.

In somewhat Apple-like fashion, the 28-year-old executive held off the juiciest information for last – confirmation that HTC and AT&T would be launching an Android phone featuring Facebook’s services front and center.

“There’s one more big thing that we want to talk about,” Zuckerberg told the audience here. He then detailed the specifics of the phone models that would be in line to get the download timed with the HTC First, coming in red, white, blue and black on April 12.

“One more thing” was, of course, a vintage suspense teaser that the late Apple CEO casually mentioned with showmanship flair at events, signaling the best part was yet to come, often near the end.

While the young Facebook executive’s speedy delivery clip, mannerisms and show flair offer a far different geek chic than the tech rock star status enjoyed by Jobs, there were other parallels.

“He sees himself as as visionary and a cult of personality,” says analyst Greg Sterling. “He’s really revered this way in the company that’s kind of analogous. There’s some aspiration to be Jobsian.”

When the event first began, a chorus of screaming came from the rear, much like an Apple event and presumably voiced by company employees.

If all that weren’t enough, Zuckerberg referenced how Facebook’s Android move was like a bicycle for the mind, something Jobs famously said of Apple’s computers. “It’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds,” Jobs said years ago.

For Facebook’s move on Android phones, it remains to be seen whether people will enjoy the ride.
