Everything you need to know about Apple’s new tablet

If you fancied an iPad but couldn’t possibly buy something seven millimetres thick, Apple has good news for you: the iPad Air 2 is just 6.1mm thick.

There’s a gold version too, but the improvements aren’t just cosmetic.

If thin is in, the iPad Air 2 is the in-est tablet around. By changing the way it makes its displays and eliminating the gaps between layers, Apple has managed to make its flagship tablet 18% thinner.

It’s managed to do that without sacrificing battery life, which is impressive – most of the iPad is made up of battery – and as you’d expect the insides have been updated too.

The most obvious change is the arrival of TouchID, Apple’s fingerprint sensor. It’s a great way of unlocking your device, but it’s also there because of Apple Pay, which is Apple’s payment system.

You won’t be able to use the iPad to pay for things in shops because it doesn’t have the NFC chip that Apple put in the iPhone 6, but you will be able to approve in-app purchases using your fingerprint.

The other really obvious change is the arrival of a gold version. It’s the same champagne-y colour as the equivalent iPhone, and of course there are black (‘Space Grey’) and white (‘Silver’) models too.

The iPad Air 2 also gets a faster processor, a modified version of the A8 processor you’ll find in the iPhone 6.

It promises up to 40% faster performance and 2.5x faster graphics, and it also contains an image processor to help you take better photos.

The camera has been improved too: it’s been upped from 5 megapixels to 8, and it gets the slo-mo and timelapse features we’ve already seen on the iPhone.

Prices haven’t changed but the storage capacities have been. There’s no longer a 32GB model, although we’d have preferred it if Apple had dumped the 16GB model instead.

Prices start at £399 for 16GB rising to £559 for 128GB, and if you want the cellular version it’s £100 more. Online ordering starts today.
