Dubai to have 100,000 hotel rooms by Expo 2020

Dubai: Dubai’s hospitality industry is set for a busy time ahead as hotel operators are expected to open more than 35,000 new rooms between 2015 and 2020.

According to calculations by TOPHOTELPROJECTS, an online database for worldwide first-class and luxury hotel construction projects, Dubai’s hotel rooms will reach more than 100,000 by 2020, when the emirate hosts the much anticipated World Expo.

Dubai currently has 65,000 hotel rooms. The additional supply is likely to increase competition in the hotel industry, which is currently facing low occupancy rates, and create thousands of career opportunities.

Analysts said that construction of hotels in Dubai is now at an “all-time high”. By 2017, Dubai hotels will experience the “busiest” time, with 30 projects slated for opening.

Some of the high-profile luxury properties, the first fully solar-powered Hotel indigo in Sustainable City, the luxurious urban resort by Mandarin Oriental and the Bulgari luxury hotels, are due to debut in the emirate in two years.
