Police have sealed off the Dubai Prosecution Building after a woman visitor threatened to detonate what she said was an explosive belt.
Prosecution sources said that the woman – thought to be a Chechen in her late 30s – entered the building shortly after 1pm accompanied by a child, thought to be aged 6, and stood next to the reception desk.
This picture was taken shortly after the building was evacuated.
Sources said the woman was known to prosecutors and had previously visited the building on numerous occasions. Her husband is thought to be a Syrian in custody.
It is believed that the woman is demanding to talk to a high ranking official.
Police, Civil Defence, ambulance, and rescue personnel have cordoned off the area around the building in Bur Dubai close to the floating bridge and bystanders are being moved away.
A police officer at the scene said the deputy chief of Dubai Police, Major General Khamis Al Mazeina, has taken charge of operations.
At around 3.50pm, officers escorted a female lawyer into the building to speak to the woman.
An employee at the prosecution building said the woman was talking to officials about her husband who is in Dubai Central Prison. She was speaking in Arabic, English and Russian.
The situation is ongoing.
