The UAQ Traffic Police on Monday warned motorists not to leave their vehicle engines running when parked. The warning comes after the police recorded a spate of car thefts recently.

According to a senior officer, a fine of Dh300 shall be slapped against such a violation as per the new federal traffic law.

Lt-Col Saeed Obaid bin Aran, Director of traffic and Patrols Department of the UAQ Police, announced a new campaign to curb such incidents.

“We have already distributed some awareness brochures in front of the emirate’s mosques, gas stations, banks and ATMs, apart from the regular inspection patrols deployed.”

Adding, he said the one-month drive is aimed at urging motorists to take due safety procedures when parking their cars. “Parking a vehicle is only allowed at designated areas and motorists must lock the same before leaving.”

Young children should never be left alone inside the car, and the same applies to precious items and important belongings, he added.

Elaborating, Lt-Col Obaid bin Aran said that recent reports show that some motorists leave their vehicle engines running when they park to go for prayers, particularly in the afternoon.

“Some others have been doing the same while going for shopping, fueling their vehicles, and withdrawing cash from banks or ATMs, and as a result precious items were stolen from their vehicles.”

As per some media reports, a child who was left alone in a car with the engine running, played with the automatic transmission and managed to steer the vehicle to the middle of the road, almost causing a fatal accident.

Another child died after winding up the window of the vehicle with his head out. The glass led to the suffocation and death of the child who was unable to free himself and there was no one to attend to him.

In another incident, a driver had left two children in the vehicle and went for shopping. One of them took a cigarette lighter and accidently started a fire in the vehicle. The children were lucky enough as a sergeant on duty immediately broke the side glass and rescued them.

Lt-Col Obaid bin Aran said young children should never be left alone in the car without being attended to by a grown up person who can contact the driver when needed.
