A new study conducted by the American researchers has suggested thateating a daily portion of nuts benefits people to have longer lives.

The recent study which is the largest ever done research on the issue linked eating nuts to a healthier lifestyle.

Researchers tracked nearly 120,000 men and women for 30 years and found that those who regularly consumed nuts were less likely to die during the study period than those ones who never ate nuts, according to the findings published in the New EnglandJournal of Medicine.

Eating nuts, up to four portions, was linked to a 13% reduction in deaths and a daily handful of nuts cut the death rate during the study by 20%, study indicates.

“The most obvious benefit was a reduction of 29% in deaths from heart disease, but we also saw a significant reduction about 11% in the risk of dying from cancer,” said the lead researcher Dr Charles Fuchs, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

As nuts are high in unsaturated fats, protein and vitamins, as well as antioxidants, they are linked to a lower risk of heart disease.

The oils in nuts can reduce bad cholesterol and possibly inflammation, experts explain.

While the benefits were seen from peanuts, pistachios, almonds, walnuts and other tree nuts, researchers recommend various nuts and say “a handful of nuts a day keeps the doctor away.”

“Choosing plain, unsalted options rather than honeyed, salted, dry-roasted or chocolate-covered will keep your salt and sugar intake down,” recommended by the senior dietician Victoria Taylor at the British Heart Foundation.
