Coronavirus (Covid-19)

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Coronavirus /Covid-19 was discovered in China in the year ‘2019’. It quickly spread throughout the world within a few months, leading up to around 7000 deaths in more than 150 countries. It is a zoonotic virus and was never found in humans before, the primary cause is discovered to be two animals, one a very athletic looking ‘civet cat’, and another certain type of camel. However, rumors about the consumption of bat soup are also prevalent.

This Coronavirus can easily transmit from shaking hands, sharing towels, coughing and sneezing when the infected person’s mouth is uncovered. WHO recommends infected persons to be in isolation until they fully recover. Some common symptoms are as follows: dry cough, pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, fever and in extreme cases kidney failure and death. The international organization also published an infographic stating that the virus will continue to spread even in cold water because it depends on the temperature of the human body, which continues to be 36.5 to 37 Degree Celsius regardless of the region of inhabitation.

The organization also published that taking hot showers will not make any difference, neither will using ultraviolet lamps or hand dryers. The only thing effective in the prevention of virus spreading is washing hands, covering your mouth while sneezing or coughing and maintaining a safe distance from the patient. Scientists throughout the world are still experimenting in order to develop the vaccine for the novel coronavirus(Covid-19).

According to Dawn News, Pakistan, there are more than 200 cases confirmed in Pakistan of the deadly coronavirus (Covid-19) disease. The Government of Pakistan is taking measures just like the rest of the world, but at a slower speed. The federal government announced the closing of all educational institutes for at least 20 days and implementation of section 144 of the code of criminal procedure. The implementation of section 144 translates to the fact that at any public place no more than four persons could gather at the time. The government also announced the closing of wedding halls for some time until further notice and urged people to conduct small-scale ceremonies at their homes.

The 18th amendment in 1973 constitution transferred health legislation from federal to provinces, which lead to not just distribution of administration but also scapegoating of provincial administrations. This is prevalent in cases like coronavirus (Covid-19) where provincial administrations continue to blame the rest of the country for not putting up enough quarantine measures. The Federal government in coordination with Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Baluchistan, and Gilgit Baltistan is releasing statements for business to run as usual but to postpone government tests and interviews, to continue online education for students, to increase security and health checks on immigrants coming from neighboring countries and international flights are only allowed from Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore airport.

This is the high time, people of Pakistan pray for the well being of their fellow citizens, to focus on their physical and mental health, to develop new creative habits, to self reflect, to spend time with family and to look forward to a stable and secure future.
