‘Citizenship’ campaign backs veteran worker
JEDDAH: Social media is abuzz with the news of an 80-year-old man who has been relieved of his duties after working for four decades at the Prophet’s Mosque.
Citizens have launched a campaign for the man, identified as Moqtada by publishing his photograph on social media with appeals to the employer to honor him instead of firing him.“It was a hard moment when my company informed me that I was being relieved of my duties due to old age,” Moqtad says.
Some citizens have also urged the government to grant this worker citizenship or permanent iqama, while some saying that Moqtad deserves a permanent salary for his long service at the Prophet’s Mosque.
Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper writer Hamad Al-Majed, said: “I have informed an official in the Saudi Binladin Group about the purpose of this campaign.”
Monaira Al-Qadeeb, a Saudi woman writer, also supported the campaign for the elderly man and said such workers must be honored.
