After five days of strike action baggage handlers have settled their dispute with Swissport and have returned to work. Baggage handling activities at Brussels Airport have returned to normal.

Last weekend 1,500 employees of baggage handler Swissport walked out in a dispute about work pressure and staffing levels.

Agreement was only reached after a member of Swissport’s international management was flown in from South Africa.

Frank Moreels of the socialist transport union: “Planes will no longer be unloaded by teams of two people. The work will now be done by 3 or 4 people depending on the type of plane. Work pressure in the morning and the evenings will be cut. There will be a limit on the number of shifts a worker can do every month.”

The agreement follows threats by Brussels Airport and the Belgian Transport Minister Melchior Wathelet (Francophone Christian democrat) to have baggage handling equipment seized. The transport union is incensed by the minister’s action: Frank Moreels “What Wathelet did only made matters worse. He did not contribute to a solution.”

Suitcases reunited?

Jan Van der Cruysse of Brussels Airport confirms that baggage handling activities at Zaventem have resumed. The airport has warned passengers that it could take a few days before all the luggage that piled up during the dispute is reunited with their owners. Mr Van der Cruysse is urging travellers not to go to the airport to pick up their luggage but to await a call from their airline.

People leaving today should experience normal baggage handling facilities.
