SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is replacing a “very limited” number of new iPhones after finding a manufacturing defect that has limited battery performance.

“We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5s devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life,” Apple spokeswoman Teresa Brewer said.

“We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone,” she added.

Apple did not say how many phones have been affected by the manufacturing issue, however the company is mostly contacting customers by phone, suggesting the problem is not widespread. Apple sold nine million new iPhones on launch weekend in late September.

The defect also does not affect the safety of the iPhone batteries.
