Egyptian authorities have banned Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr from working in the country.

The ministers of investment, telecommunication and information issued a statement on Thursday stating the Qatari channel was banned from Egypt because it does not have legal permits or permission to work in the country.

The channel had been using unlicensed broadcasting devices, the statement added.

The statement accused the channel of spreading lies and rumours damaging to Egyptian national security and unity.

On 15 August, the cabinet asked the ministries of information, telecommunication and investment to check the channel’s legal status.

Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr’s offices in Cairo have been closed since 3 July 2013. It is currently broadcasting from Qatar. The channel is still operating on Nile Sat, broadcasting news and clips from pro-Muslim Brotherhood rallies in Egypt.

The channel started broadcasting in 2011 as a spin off from Qatar’s Al Jazeera channel. It focuses mainly on Egyptian news.

It has been criticised by some observers for being biased towards the Muslim Brotherhood.
