Afghanistan rejects Ex-ISI chief Hamid Gul’s remarks on elections security

The Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan rejected the remarks of former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Gen. Hamid Hamid who claimed that Taliban militants did not carry out attacks as the group had reached an agreement with the U.S.

Gen. Hamid Gul has also claimed that the main motive behind the deal between Taliban and US was to reflect the capabilities of the Afghan security forces.

Defense Ministry following a statement strongly rejected the remarks of Gen. Hamid Gul and said the Taliban militants together with their foreign supporters failed to carry out major attacks during elections day despite continuous attempts.

The statement by Defense Ministry further added that the Taliban militants carried out more attacks during April 5 elections; however Taliban failed to disrupt the voting process.

According to defense officials, Taliban carried out around 690 attacks across the country and the Taliban group also claimed they carried out over 1000 attacks during the elections day.

Hamid Gul served as the director general of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence during 1987-89 and is accused of having ties with the Taliban group.
