Data security is an important concern for any business owner, moreso now than ever before. When storing your records of consumer’s’ private information, you should consider all your options to better protect your business. Here are a few steps in the right direction to better protect you and your company’s reputation for the road ahead.

1. Use a Firewall and Antivirus Protection

To better protect your network, you should have firewalls put in place to help control traffic coming in and out of your online site. Firewalls are pretty standard, as far as digital security goes. They work to keep your computer network safe by managing all the traffic entering in and coming out of your business.

Anti-malware and antivirus should be installed next to act as a powerful security arsenal. They are one of the last lines of defense and can prevent nearly every attack to your business’s network.

2. Perform Regular Backups

Regularly backing up to the cloud or an external drive is one of the easiest ways to make sure all your data is being stored safely. Generally, you should be backing up your data on a weekly basis, with small backups performed each night. Personal devices should also be backed up each week for added protection.

Backing up your entire network can help to limit any damage done in the case of a breach. After all, having your data corrupted can be a hassle. Backing up your private data is one of the best ways to lose less of it when that happens.

3. Create Strong Passwords

This is one of the simplest ways you can protect your company’s online data. Instructing all of your employees to use strong passwords can strengthen your entire company’s security. All passwords should contain a combination of numbers, upper case and lower case letters, and symbols. The optimal length is between eight and 12 characters. You should also stay away from using any personal data like your birthday in your password or any common words. And definitely, do not make your password be “password.”

Every employee should change all of their passwords every 90 days, at least. If the password is protecting very sensitive data, you should consider changing it more frequently. You should also provide your employees each with their own username and password for every login system that your business uses. Do not simply have one shared password and username. This can increase your security risk. Also, remind your employees to never write down their passwords.

4. Monitor Your Systems Meticulously

There are plenty of tools available to you to keep your and your customers’ online data safe. However, if you do not use the tools available to you, they won’t be any help at all. You should consider hiring somebody to be responsible for and handle all of your online security.

Consider installing data loss prevention software on all of your systems. This sort of software can determine if there is any data in your system that would indicate any sort of a breach. It can monitor anything from credit card numbers to code. Without proper monitoring in place, by the time you discover a breach, it will be too late.

Having good data security habits are necessary for an online business to perform well. Hopefully, the four security tips above could serve as guidelines for managing your private online data.
