Some 100,000 applicants flocked to a job aptitude test on Sunday administered by the Samsung Group in Seoul and other major cities here as well as Los Angeles, New York and Toronto.

The test is the first in a series of exams that lead to employment by the huge conglomerate. These were the most applicants since the test started in 1995.

Samsung is hiring 5,500 new staff in the second half of this year, which translates into a competition ratio of 20:1 for every job.

The recruitment drive is the biggest by a domestic business conglomerate this year.

A long stream of applicants could be spotted walking up from the subway station to the test venue in Daechi-dong in southern Seoul on Sunday morning.

The exam started at 9:30 a.m. and ended at 11:40 a.m. without a break. Each test room had a seating capacity of 30 and two staffers from the group were allocated to each room to supervise the test.

The conglomerate said it sent 9,000 staff to assist in administering the exam.

But experts recommend that Samsung should decrease its reliance on standardized exams for recruitment. “Samsung should look for ways to gauge the individual talents of applicants,” said Lee Jae-yeol at Seoul National University.
